Rajamahendravaram: The RTI Act provides every citizen a right to question the government authorities on various public welfare activities and it is the responsibility of authorities to provide information to show the transparency, said Lam Thanthi Kumari, Commissioner, RTI Act.
She was participating in a seminar on implementation of RTI Act and Right to Education Act which was held at SKVT College Rajamahendravaram in East Godavari district on Tuesday.
In this connection, she said that it is the responsibility of parents to question the managements of private educational institutions on fee structure and student amenities.
She further said that Right to Education Act provides certain provisions to provide education to the common man and it is the responsibility of the management to adhere to these provisions. With regard to the RTI Act, the Commissioner said that a stage has come for strict implementation of the Act as the awareness about it was almost done among the officials.
She said that a few of the educational institutions were trying to avoid the Act implementation with the contention that they would not come under the purview of the act. The Commissioner said that every institution getting support from the government was supposed to implement that act. She also said that the endowments which deal with temple matters and the cooperation department deals with farmers’ interest have to respond to the Act.
Speaking on the provisions of protecting the rights of RTI activists, the Commissioner said that monitoring committees were constituted at district-level and suggested to the government departments to concentrate more on creating awareness among the public.
Prof M Mutyala Naidu, Vice-Chancellor Adikavi Nannaya University suggested the public to take leaders like B R Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi as role models to follow with regard to RTI Act.
