A two-judge bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice A Shankar Narayana on Wednesday directed the government of Andhra Pradesh to respond to the question of jurisdiction of the court to adjudicate the recent encounter wherein 24 Maoists were killed in a joint operation by the police of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

The bench was dealing with a PIL filed by Civil Liberties Committee of AP. AP Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas informed the court that the encounter took place in Odisha and that none of the dead bodies were brought to AP. As reported earlier, the bench had directed the twin States of Telangana and AP to preserve the dead bodies.

Counsel for the petitioner Raghunath pointed out that the AP DGP had made a statement that Grey Hounds personal of AP had participated in the encounter and hence the court had jurisdiction in the said matter.
The bench directed the government of AP to file an affidavit regarding its stand on the territorial jurisdiction. The bench adjourned the matter to next week.
