Kakinada: The working of Kakinada Government General Hospital (KGGH) came to a grinding halt on Saturday following the boycott of duties by doctors, medical, staff, PG students and house-surgeons alleging high-handed behaviour by Pithapuram TDP MLA SVSN Varma.

The doctors said that the MLA who visited an accident-victim of his constituency at the hospital on Friday had abused the duty doctors using foul language.

According to sources, K Venkateswara Rao, a resident of Pithapuram sustained severe burn injuries when he fell from a live-electric pole while discharging his duties as a lineman under a private contractor.

He was provided first aid at Pithapuram and later rushed to KGGH on Friday.

Trouble started when the MLA’s supporters and locals from S. Rayavaram
gathered outside the casualty ward and found fault with the medical staff on duty and doctors for keeping the injured person without providing any medical aid for hours together.

The injured person was lager operated on and shifted to the ward.

But representatives of doctors of KGGH, ARMO, Dr U Sudheer alleged that the MLA who came rushing to the hospital at around 8.30 in the night started abusing causality medical officer Dr Karimulla and the junior doctors and house surgeons attending to medical care in the ward, Dr Sudheer also alleged that NLA , Varma not only abused Dr Karimulla and his team but even banged the mobile of the medical officer to the ground.

Medical superintendent of the hospital Dr Y Nageswara Rao was also abused, said Dr Sudheer.

The medicos and staff demanded an apology from the MLA and said an FIR should be booked against him failing which they would resort to complete boycott of duties on Monday, they said.

When contacted on the issue, the MLA said that he had not abused any doctor on duty.

Narrating the incident on Saturday evening he said that the injured Venkateswara Rao was brought to KGGH around 2.30 in the afternoon but he was denied admission till he [MLA] arrived at 8.30 in the evening.

He further said the doctors had informed him that the head injuries sustained by Venkateswara Rao were not of a serious nature, but conducted head surgery on the latter.

Stating that
Venkateswara Rao was a Dalit, the MLA questioned whether it was a crime to demand medical aid to a Dalit.

Mean while KGGH superintendent Dr Y Nageswara Rao said that currently, they could manage ICUs, emergencies and labor rooms.

“We will take stock of the situation on Monday,” he said.
