Visakhapatnam: The proposed plans to construct a ‘bulb line’ an elevated corridor near Vizag Railway Station, by the East Coast Railway, seems to had run into trouble with Visakhapatnam Port Trust refusing land for the project.
The construction of a bulb line enables engines to reverse without changing the direction of the train, thus reducing halting time in Vizag Railway Station.
The authorities of ECoR has urged Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu to prevail upon the Visakhapatnam Port Trust to part with the land required to construct the Bulb Line elevated corridor through the Vizag Port area and connecting the main line at Gopalapatnam.

The railway authorities expressed that the Bulb Line would reduce the time required for reversal of trains at the station, halting time and thereby handling capacity of the station. Replying to a query on the proposed bulb line, Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Trust MT Krishna Babu on Saturday said that the land was crucial part of the VPT and ruled out handing over to the railways.
The Visakhapatnam Port Trust’s land at the area was part of master plan of the port keeping in mind present and future requirements. He said it would not be feasible to allow railways to operate within the port premises and it was not followed in any other international ports.
In last November, East Coast Railway General Manager Umesh Singh urged Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to prevail upon the Visakhapatnam Port Trust to part with land required to construct the elevated corridor near Visakhapatnam Railway Station. The project cost was estimated at Rs 300 crore. But the Chief Minister put the onus on the port chairman.
