Eluru: A heavy machine excavator was burnt at Polavaram project site near Ramayyapeta village in Polavaram mandal on Friday.According to information here, the excavator was imported from Germany to use in digging up the earth at Polavaram site. The Rs.64 crores worth excavator, having two generators working at Polavaram site suddenly caught in the fire on Friday morning. First smoke came out from a generator and slowly flames engulfed the heavy machinery.

The machine operator immediately called on the superintending engineer VS Ramesh Babu and executive engineer M Pulla Rao and contracting agency official Tirumaleshan. They along with other workers tried to control the flames but in vain. The fire tender from Kovvur reached the spot and controlled the flames.

The officials said that the fire accident occurred due to short-circuit and one generator was completely burnt. The excavator was started by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on September 13 last year. It has the capacity of 20,000 cubic meters of earth drilling. So far, it had completed digging up of 2 lakh cubic meters of the earth after its inauguration.
