Vijayawada: Taking initiative to resolve deadlock on the release of water to the Krishna delta from Nagarjunasagar to meet drinking water needs, Andhra Pradesh on Sunday released water from Srisailam to Nagarjunasagar. The State was forced to take this decision as Telangana irrigation officials have persisted on the demand that they will release water from Nagarjunasagar to the Krishna delta only after their counterparts agreed to release water from Srisailam.
Around 6.5 tmc ft of water would be released from Srisailam to Sagar and the same quantity of water from Sagar would be released to the Krishna delta and Nagarjuna Sagar Project Right Main Canal (NSPRMC). Principal Secretary to AP Water Resource Department Shashi Bhushan Kumar consulted Telangana officials to resolve the issue on Sunday, according to sources. AP officials agreed to release 13,000 cusecs of water daily from Srisailam and initially it is about 5,000 cusses.
They agreed to release water on a condition that the water must be released from Nagarjunasagar to the Krishna delta and NSPRMC. But, the Krishna delta officials did not have any information by Sunday evening whether water is released from Sagar or not to Krishna Delta System (KDS). They alerted engineers of Pulichintala project but has not received any information. Krishna delta chief engineer Shashidhar Reddy told The Hans India that they may get clarity on release of water by Monday morning.
On the other hand, the response of Telangana officials has given irritation to AP officials regarding water release issue. “We have made a number of phone calls and sent SMSs to Telangana officials at Nagarjunasagar project from Sunday afternoon to evening seeking confirmation on water release to KDS. But, they did not respond,” a senior engineer said.
As per the latest update from Nagarjunasagar, 1,900 cusecs of outflow was recorded at the project. As the Pulichintals dam is almost empt (present storage is 3.36 tmc ft against 45.77 gross storage level), there was concern over drinking water needs in Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and some parts of West Godavari districts. In fact, the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) allocated 6.5 tmc ft of water to Andhra Pradesh and 1.5 tmc ft of water to Telangana. Both the States have reached to an understanding to follow the orders.
The present water storage level in Srisailam 785.2 ft (22.38 tmc ft) and it was agreed to utilise water to 775 ft level. The dead storage level is 705 ft (10.16 tmc ft). Likewise, it was also agreed to draw water from Nagarjunasagar till 502 ft level. The dead storage level of the project is 496 ft. The storage of water in the NSP is 122.36 tmc ft against its dead storage 109.1 tmc ft.
But, the Telangana officials did not release water till Sunday citing different reasons and finally said that the water would be released only if the water from Srisailam is released to Sagar. They also said that water first would be released to NSPRMC only and it would be in second phase to KDS. As the officials did not accept this, there was deadlock on water from Friday.
