Visakhapatnam: CPM leaders demanded that the state government should take every step to ensure employment to every family, who gave away their lands to the Naval Alternative Operational Base (NAOB). Addressing a press conference, here on Monday, Rao said the government made an agreement with Tech Mahindra and Wipro according to which 10,000 jobs should have been given. “However, not even 10 percent of locals were given employment,” he charged.
He said that people got permanent employment in Steel Plant, Hindustan Zinc and BHPV through agitations. “Since employment is not covered under the law, even Prime Minister’s assurance was not being honoured. During the last 40 years, no management had honoured the employment policy,” Narsinga Rao noted.
The senior left leader opined that the government should taken an undertaking from the industry promoters and should incorporate the same in MoU to ensure justice to locals.Party district secretary K Lokanadham said that 35 companies have set up their operations in Pharma City and out of 4,918 permament jobs, 50 percent were to be given to the locals but only 891 contract jobs were given to the local people.
“Later, 300 were sent home after brief employment. They are on agitation for getting back the employment,” Lokanadham stated.Regarding NAOB, Lokanadham said villagers of Rambilli and A Rayavaram mandals gave their lands way back in 2005, but so far not a single temporary or permanent job was given. “About 403 families are agitating since May 3 but the district administration is ignoring their pleas,” he rued.
He alleged that local MLA Panchakarla Ramesh Babu, after getting contracts in NAOB, was threatening the villagers to call off their agitation. “On May 12, the MLA told the agitators that the government gave him assurance and asked them to call off stir. When they refused, he is threatening them to send to jail,” he said.
