Visakhapatnam: Residents of Ekalavya Colony under Pendurthi police station limits woke up to rumors on Wednesday that plastic rice was being sold in the grocery stores and immediately lodged a complaint with the police. This was despite NGOs hectic campaign and awareness that there was nothing called as plastic rice.

A batch of residents approached circle inspector of Pendurthi police station J Murali, who forwarded the complaint to Food Safety Department of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation. The food inspectors in turn sent the samples to Food Safety Labaratory (FSL) of Hyderabad.

Circle inspector said the residents of Eka Lavya Colony approached him and complained that since one month, their children have been suffering from stomach pain and health issues after consuming rice of a particular brand. The police after enquiring with the shopkeeper, where the locals generally buy, informed that the same brand of rice was being sold all over the city. However, for confirmation and clear the doubt among the colony residents, samples were sent for testing.

Food Inspector of GVMC M Veerabhadra Rao said that though they were just rumors from locals, they seized 72 bags of rice on which the public made allegations. "We have collected a few samples and are going to send it to FSl Hyderabad", he added.
