Civic workers no to apartments

Tirupati: Municipal workers staged a dharna at Scavengers Colony here on Friday, against the construction of apartments in the existing workers dwelling residential colony. Workers led by CITU leaders gheraoed Tirupati MLA Suguna, who came to lay foundation stone for apartments to be constructed for the MCT public health workers.

But, the municipal workers are opposing the proposal to construct apartments in the place of individual houses as they were already residing. They were demanding the officials concerned to construct new houses for them after demolishing the existing houses. Along with CITU leaders, the local Congress leaders Sridevi, Ganga Raju, R Lakshmi and others also extended support to the dharna of municipal workers.

They participated in the rasta roko organised on the road leading to the Scavengers Colony. It may be noted that Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) officials have made an agreement with a private construction company to build multi-storey apartments for municipal workers in the existing individual sites. A section of municipal workers are vehemently opposing construction of apartments for the last few months.
