State govt to increase Gandikota reservoir storage capacity
Following directions of the state government, the district administration is going to take up land acquisition in Talla Proddutur, Chamaluru, Yerragudi, villages of Kondapuram mandal soon for increasing the water storage capacity of Gandikota reservoir.
Kadapa: Following directions of the state government, the district administration is going to take up land acquisition in Talla Proddutur, Chamaluru, Yerragudi, villages of Kondapuram mandal soon for increasing the water storage capacity of Gandikota reservoir.
According to sources, before taking land acquisition, the administration is proposed to conduct socio-economic survey and seek public opinion in the three villages.
Highlights:
- Land acquisition in Talla Proddutur, Chamaluru, Yerragudi, villages of Kondapuram mandal is likely to begin soon
- State govt plans to increase storage capacity to 22 tmcft as it will be helpful to farmers of Pulivendula in both rabi and Kharif seasons
If the storage capacity of Gandikota reservoir increased to 22 tmcft then it will be more helpful to farmers of Pulivendula constituency in both rabi and Kharif seasons.
As per the design, around 1 lakh acres under Gandikota left canal, which is called Chitravati Balancing Reservoir (CBR), 66,000 acres under left canal called Lingala canal will be proposed to irrigate in Pulivendula constituency.
In this connection, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has released water to Pulivendula constituency from Gandikota reservoir through Lift Irrigation Scheme(LIH) on January 11 this year. One month after launching the scheme by the Chief Minister, water release was stopped in second week of February due to lack of Full Reservoir level (FRL) that is 6 tmcft in the reservoir, which leads to withering of crops in kharif season.
After serious allegations raised by opposition parties and farmers associations, the government asked the district administration to submit comprehensive report over the issue and directed the Irrigation department to suggest what measures to be taken for uninterrupted supply of water for both agriculture and drinking water purpose to Pulivendula constituency.
When contacted by The Hans India, an official in Irrigation department said that it is highly impossible to release water for agriculture operations until the storage capacity of Gandikota reservoir increased to at least 22 tmcft. He said it was only a lift irrigation scheme and water could not be lifted if there was no sufficient water level in the reservoir.
He said there was only 1.2 tmcft of water available in the Gandikota reservoir which was stored for drinking water needs of Tadipatri, Kondapuram, Muddanuru municipalities. District Collector T Baburao Naidu said the government is keen on increasing storage capacity of Gandikota reservoir to 22 tmcft at any cost.
The Collector stated that he already had a meeting with the people of Talla Proddutur, Chamaluru, Yerragudi villages and they are responded positively over the public opinion. He said land acquisition will be taken up after completion of socio-economic survey soon.
