Visakhapatnam: After putting up efforts to improve the revenues of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), the civic body collected 58 per cent of taxes till now as against 48 per cent of the corresponding period last year, according to GVMC Commissioner M Harinarayanan.

Speaking to the media at his chambers here on Wednesday, Harinarayanan stressed that they have been focusing on bringing in a regular tax payment culture for developing the facilities in the city.

“Every year, we take up tax collection drives in September/October and March, but this process has been putting a heavy financial burden on GVMC,” he said and added that emphasising on regularisation of tax payments resulted in collection of Rs 320 crore taxes till now this year whereas last year during this period Rs 280 crore taxes were accrued.

Commenting on the Swacch Bharat programme, he praised residents of some colonies in the city for taking the cleanliness initiative so seriously. “Swacch Bharat will complete three years this October 2. It must be noted that the urban local body has been successful in bringing shift in attitude of public over cleanliness.

To involve more citizens in Swachh Bharat, we have been doing intensive 15-day awareness campaigns in all the zones starting from September 15,” he noted.

Talking about the victor borne diseases situation in the city, the civic chief said number of malaria and dengue cases have come down this year when compared to last year as well as no death cases of malaria and dengue were reported so far.
