Nellore: Potti Sriramulu, who ga ve a separate State for Telugus in the form of Andhra State with his 58 days fast and made a supreme sacrifice in 1952, is now vanished in the district as well as state as no politico or senior official paid tributes to the departed fighter. After bifurcation of the state, all is gone with the tradition and the city looked deserted on Wednesday.

In fact, prior to the state’s second bifurcation in 2014, there has been a practice of honouring Amarajeevi for his services in achieving statehood but the practice disappeared since then. Now, even though there were no instructions on respecting the leader, no private programme was also organised in the city.

In fact, Potti Sriramulu, who was born in Chennai, belong to Nellore district as his parents were from the district. He studied in Chennai and Mumbai and finally reached Nellore for spending time with local population after death of his wife at the age of 25. Attracted by the philosophy of Mahatma, he joined the national movement and started his fast on October 19, 1952 at Chennai for a separate Andhra state and continued until he died on December 15 night.

The Andhra State was formed in October 1953 and on November 1, 1956, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka states were formed, followed by Gujarat and Maharashtra in 1960. The formation of linguistic states is the important event in the history of south Indian languages.

“A person who fought for the separate statehood has been disregarded and no politico or senior official remembered his services at least as a practice. This is very agonising to the district population,” said Deputy Chairman of Nellore Municipal Corporation M Dwarakanath.

Now, his birth and death anniversaries are likely to be observed due to bifurcation of the state in 2014 as the State government had not issued any special directions on the events.

A senior political leader commented that this has been due to directions of the State government for not observing any special occasion on the day which was celebrated for more than 60 years.
