Visakhapatnam: Advance technology and the rise of cost-oriented healthcare management has changed the nurse-patient dynamics and created new challenges for the nursing profession, said GITAM President MVVS Murthi.

Addressing a gathering at GITAM University Institute of Nursing here on Wednesday, MVVS Murthi said that cultivating humanism in nursing education can sustain nurses' adherence to patient-centred care amidst rapid changes in the health care system.

Humanity education can further help nurses develop deeper insights into their own values and life experiences and in turn, assist them to deal with life and work-related frustrations more effectively, he added. He suggested that the young people must follow the footsteps of Mother Teressa, Sister Nirmala and Florence Nightingale. On the occasion, MVVS Murthi distributed tabs which are loaded with nursing syllabus.

Vice-Chancellor of GITAM University MS Prasada Rao said that nurses play a pivotal role in caring for people and every person is unique, providing holistic care was a central to the nursing profession.

Principal of GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR) Medical College SPRao stated that health care is a collective responsibility of doctors, nursing and paramedical staff.

He suggested that the present day nursing profession should concentrate on incentive care and critical care aspects to meet the health care requirements. Superintendent of GIMSR Hospital Varalakshmi, noted surgeon A Shivaji and Principal of GITAM Institute of Nursing S Kanaka Lakshmi were present.
