Vijayawada: Students of two schools-- Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS) Cheedigummala, Visakhapatnam and Mandal Praja Parishad School (MPPS), Vommavaram village of Visakhapatnam district were selected for national awards for their projects in ‘Promoting Green Energy and Power Conservation’ where children promoted LED lights usage and ‘Bio Fenced Compound Wall’ where children constructed their own bio fenced compound to avoid unwanted visitors.

According to Jayaram Komati, Andhra Pradesh Special Representative for North America, the two schools will receive awards at Design For Change I CAN Conference to be held at Ahmedaba in Gujarat on December 9 and 10.

In a press release on Saturday, he informed that around 1,700 projects from 26 states went for the jury. ZPHS, Cheedigummala promoted Green Energy and Power Conservation. The problem of power outage was severe in their school. Students identified the sources of power wastage and rectified them. They also replaced tungsten bulbs with LED bulbs in 25 households and noticed a significant reduction of 118 units in power consumption.

They taught the community an important lesson on Power Conservation. Students at MPPS, Vommavaram designed a Bio-fenced Compound Wall to protect themselves from unwanted visitors. Students met with the Forest Department officials to acquire knowledge and tools for their action plans. A Kitchen Garden was also designed along with it. They shared the project with MEO and Forest officer.

Janmabhoomi is a flagship social initiative of the Government of Andhra Pradesh. It involves NRI’s to contribute towards the development of the sunrise state. The cost of the project is borne 30 percent by NRI’s and 70 percent the State government.
More than 1,500 government schools became digital schools under the programme.
