Ongole: Ongole MP YV Subba Reddy met Union Minister for Industries Suresh Prabhu and brought to his notice the plight of the tobacco farmers in Prakasam district. He pleaded with him to protect their interests.

He urged the Union Minister to give subsidies and purchase the tobacco leaves early. He also met Union Minister for Textiles, Information and Broadcasting, Smrithi Irani and urged her to increase the broadcast of FM signals and strengthen them in the district.

He also told her to implement the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyothi Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) effectively for the weavers in the district.

In a press release here on Thursday, MP Subba Reddy said that he met the Union two Ministers in New Delhi and asked them to take some decisions in favour of the suffering tobacco farmers and weavers. He said that speaking with Suresh Prabhu, he explained that the tobacco farmers in the district are incurring heavy losses every year and asked him to announce Rs 10 lakh as compensation for them.

He complained to the Minister for State for Industries that the farmers lost nearly Rs 300 crore due to the commencement of auction very late. He said that the Tobacco Board was troubling farmers by not giving them subsidised tools and other equipment for drying the tobacco leaves.

In his meeting with Smriti Irani, the MP explained that there was an urgent need of setting up a yarn supply depot in the district headquarters, Ongole, for the weavers. He asked her to supply yarn and silk at 30 percent subsidy, provide health insurance, not to levy GST on handlooms and offer loans through banks for the weavers.

The MP also asked the Minister to enhance the capacity of radio signals in the district. As the district was having a coastal line of 110 km, the fishermen depend on the radio signals for alerts on the weather, he told the Union Minister. He asked her to setup an FM radio station at Ongole as the Vijayawada and Hyderabad signals are becoming weak in the district.
