Visakhapatnam: Finally, D Satish, the sailor among 22 crew of a vessel, which was hijacked by pirates at Port of Cotonou, Benin, safely reached the city on Tuesday. Satish, along with the crew struggled for six days in the clutches of pirates. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs successfully released the vessel and crew from the pirates.

Requesting the Centre for immediate release of Satish, who hails from Visakhapatnam city, MP K Haribabu exerted pressure on the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Satish, along with his family members, met the MP and thanked the government for its timely help.

Satish’s father Krishna said that after receiving information that the vessel, along with the crew, was hijacked by the pirates, they met the MP on February 3, urging him to speak to the Foreign Affairs Minister for lobbying with the pirates. The MP immediately responded and spoke to the ministry in this regard.

Speaking on the occasion, Satish said that the region near Benin, especially the Gulf of Guinea, is known to be a dark spot in the sea as several ships have been captured. “My ship Anglo Eastern Ship reached Port of Cotonou on January 1, with 22 Indian sailors.

Due to negligence of the captain and lack of security measures taken on ship, a 13-member group of pirates with weapons attacked the ship in the wee hours by bashing up one of the sailors on the deck.

After checking the tankers, they informed the buyers of crude oil. However, as no one came to purchase the oil, they shifted the vessel to some other unknown area. With the Indian government negotiations with several other parties they left the ship and safely reached Mumbai,” Satish said.
