Amaravati: Expressing concern over the sale of poor quality of products, high prices, cheating in weights and measurements, Minister for Civil Supplies and Chairman of the State Vigilance Committee, Prathipati Pulla Rao called upon the consumers to strengthen their movement to check these menaces. Addressing the Vigilance Committee meeting at the Secretariat here on Tuesday, the minister said that the prices of generic medicines and essential commodities would be controlled.
The Minister appealed to the office-bearers of Ration Shop Dealers Association to prevent their members from indulging in irregularities and to stop diverting ration rice to the millers. Efforts are on to change crop pattern to supply quality rice to people through ration shops. He said that 38,000 applications for new ration cards, change of address and other details on ration cards are pending and they would be cleared in 15 days.
``Instead of selling three varieties of goods at three different prices at Chandranna Malls, it would be better if quality goods are sold at one price,’’ he said and instructed the officials to invite the representatives of Reliance and KPMG companies.
Referring to the gas fire accidents in Anantapur where one person died and in Chilakalauripet where property was damaged, the minister instructed the officials to take steps to pay compensation to the victims through gas companies. Some participants pointed out cheating in the name of Hall mark gold ornaments. They referred to an incident wherein there was only 650 grams of pure gold when two kg gold was purchased from a renowned jewellery shop.
The Minister assured the members that the government would set up five testing centres in the State to verify the quality of gold ornaments. The district-level vigilance committees would be formed soon.
Civil supplies Commissioner Buditi Rajasekhar has said that people need not pay even one rupee extra other than the price printed on the bill. He informed the members that in case of gas accidents, the kin of the deceased would be paid Rs 6 lakh and Rs 2 lakh for property loss.
