Vijayawada: As many as 1,000 students from various institutions in the city participated in the human chain organised by Student Organisations Joint Action Committee (JAC) at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium under the tight vigilance of the police here on Wednesday.

Students participated in the human chain in protest against the Central government and demanded that the Centre fulfil the bifurcation promises and accord special category status to the state.

They raised slogans demanding Kadapa Steel Plant, special railway zone Visakhapatnam as headquarters, release of funds for the construction of capital city Amaravati and fulfil other promises under AP Reorganisation Act.

The student organisation leaders and political party leaders belonging to all the parties participated in the protest in support of the students. YSRSU city president D Anji Reddy alleged that the government and the department had warned the students not to participate in the human chain as the students were willing to join voluntarily in support of JAC.

He said that about one crore students of all ages participated in the human chain across the state. He said that both the Central and State government had failed to render justice to the students in establishing 11 Central universities in the state. He demanded that the government accord SCS and render justice to the people.

PDSU state president Ravi Charan demanded that the Central government implement the promises made to the state and render justice to the five crore people of Andhra Pradesh. He assailed the police for disrupting the proceedings of human chain by saying that they do not have permission to organise the same.

AISF state president Afsar demanded that the Central government establish Kadapa Steel Plant, railway zone to create employment to the unemployed youth. He further demanded that the BJP-led NDA government release funds for the construction of capital Amaravati and fulfil other promises under AP Reorganisation Act.

Pratyeka Hoda, Vibhajana Hameela Sadhana Samiti president Ch Srinivas, secretary K Ramakrishna, YSRCP city working president Malladi Vishnu, CPM state secretary Madhu, Congress leader Dr Gangadhar, student leaders and others participated in the human chain.
