Akiveedu: Students of Class X studying in a government school complained to the Collector over teacher shortage at weekly programme of Meekosam in Eluru on Monday. The students in the school at Chinakapavaram in Akiveedu mandal personally met the Collector K Bhaskar at his chambers and elaborated their tale of woes.
They informed him that they were lagging behind in biology and social studies as the school has only one teacher each for these subjects. For the total strength of 386 students, the teacher strength should be at least 16. However, the present strength of teachers is only 10. Two teachers each for biology and social was necessity of the school. But the school has only one teacher for each of these subjects. For Telugu and Hindi one teacher each should be appointed.
When contacted, head-master Ramanuja Charyulu confessed that there is shortage for teachers in the school. They had already brought to the notice of the officials three months ago. Though the officials assigned additional responsibilities to two teachers they were still not joining the duties. While one teacher is supposed to come from Kolamuru, another had to come from Akiveedu, he added.
Following the complaint from students, the irate Collector grilled the District Education Officer over the problem. He directed the DEO to suspend the teachers if they would not attend duties by Tuesday. The complaint by students was significant in the wake of government’s efforts to attract students from private schools to join government schools. While the students have been tilting towards private schools, the government schools are heading towards closure without proper staff.
