Ongole: The Viplava Rachayitala Sangham (Virasam), other civil liberties and people’s unions along with Dalit organizations demanded that the government release Varavara Rao and others by scrapping cases against them.

The Virasam leader, G Kalyan Rao and others organised a press meet in Ongole Press Club on Wednesday and asked for the release of five persons arrested by the Maharashtra police on Tuesday, by conducting searches and raids all over the country.

Kalyana Rao said that Maharashtra police arrested Varavara Rao, Vernon Gonsalves, Arun Ferreira, Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha in a situation similar to Emergency.

He said that the police put Section 13, 16, 17, 18 (B), 20, 34, 38, 39, 40 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and 153 (A), 505 (1), 117, 120 (B) of IPC illegally.

He said that the arrest of Varavara Rao, who was fighting against the anti-public decisions of the Central and state governments for a long time, was nothing but the motive of BJP and its allied organizations to silence the revolutionaries, journalists, intellectuals, writers and other people working for the public.

The other leaders, including Chavali Sudhakar, Duddu Venkatarao, Kongara Naraimham, Challapalli Narasimha Rao explained that the war between Dalits and Pishwa military at Koregaon Bhima completed 200 years and a rally was organised to mark the event.

But the BJP, RSS and other organisations attacked the people in the rally and booked a case against the grandchildren of Ambedkar and other civil liberties activists including Varavara Rao and others that they were involved in a plot by Maoists to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, based on a said letter found in the laptop of a liberties activist Rona Wilson.

The speakers alleged that the BJP and its supporting organisations were trying to implement Manusmriti in the place of Constitution and were acting violently against those people questioning them.

They demanded that the government release Varavara Rao and others immediately and asked the public to join them in the fight against the Hindutwa forces to protect democracy in the country.
