Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee on Saturday ridiculed the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he would believe that there was democracy in the Congress party if a person other than non-Nehru family is appointed as the president of the party. APCC vice-president Dr N Tulasi Reddy recalled that in the 133 years long history of Congress party, 93 years the party was headed by members other than non-Nehru family and 13 of them were Telugu people.

He also said that right from WC Bannerjee to Rahul Gandhi 64 persons headed the party and 58 of them including six Telugu persons were from non-Nehru family. He also reminded the Prime Minister said that since independence, of the 14 Prime Ministers only six of them were Congress and three of them were non-Nehru family. Out of 14 Presidents of India since Independence, none of them were Nehru family members, he pointed out.

He ridiculed the Prime Minister’s claim that he was a poor man stating that a person who dons suits worth several lakhs of rupees and leads a luxurious life could not be a poor man. He recalled that former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was the simplest person and now Rahul Gandhi is the personification of simplicity. He said that while Congress was symbol of democracy, the BJP is the reflection of dictatorship.
