As global carmakers bet big on the Indian market, Hyundai and Honda are leaving no stone unturned to capture the demand for Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPVs). Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) Managing Director and CEO BS Seo recently said that the firm is working on the development of an MPV. "It (MPV) is the only vehicle that is missing in our line up.

We have started the work on the development of MPV," he said without sharing details. When launched, the MPV will take on the likes of the Honda Mobilio, the Renault Lodgy and the Mahindra Xylo. On the other hand, Honda is considering introducing a compact SUV in the country and has undertaken a study on it.

Speaking about new launches, company director and senior vice president - marketing & sales, Hiroyuki Shimizu recently said Honda has no plans for more new launches this year, but is seriously considering the compact SUV segment.

"We are in an advanced stage of a study on the compact SUV space and based on the study's outcome will take a call. The compact SUV is a growing market," Honda Cars India AVP Marketing Anita Sharma has said.

She said the annual market size of the compact sports utility vehicles (SUV) segment in the country is pegged at 8,000-10,000 units per month. While Hyundai recently launched its much talked about SUV Creta, Honda has launched the facelifted Jazz.
