Hyderabad: Cab-hailing firm, Uber, on Wednesday entered into a partnership with the Backward Classes Welfare Corporation and Tribal Welfare Corporation, Telangana government, for providing financial assistance to backward classes (BC) and scheduled tribes (ST) communities to help them become fulltime commercial drivers under the driver-cum-owner (DCO) scheme.
As part of the scheme, the State government will provide 60 per cent upfront subsidy on the onroad price of a commercial car (select models only). Uber will assist the department in the qualification and selection of the beneficiaries, coordinating with the financiers and dealers to ensure beneficiaries get the best price on the car and subsequently provide training to them on technology, navigation, driver etiquette and other soft skills.
On a pilot basis, the department has identified 25 beneficiaries from Hyderabad for the subsidy. The department will then monitor their performance on Uber for a period of one month before expanding the scheme to other districts in Telangana. The department aims to 1,000 cars under this scheme in 2016, Uber said in a statement on Wednesday.
