Suggests M Veda Kumar, Chairperson of the Children’s Film Society AP and the Chairperson of the jury for the ‘Little Directors’ segment

“This is the first time that the ‘Little Directors’ category has been introduced and the committee selected 12 films made by Indian children of which we selected two films for the awards,” shared M Veda Kumar, Chairperson of the Children’s Film Society AP and the Chairperson of the jury for the ‘Little Directors’ segment. He is also the President of Forum for Better Hyderabad and Co-Convenor Intach, AP Chapter.

The other jury members of the ‘Young Directors’ category include Stephanie Ruckoldt from Germany and Bobbeeta Sharma, actor, director from Assam. “The concept was picked from Berlin Film Festival that has ‘Kids for Kids’ even in the main festival. In fact, in the last 15 years CFS AP has conducted several filmmaking workshops and children made around 20 films – all on their own – and that includes the script, camera, editing, music, subtitles and titles. In addition, the children under the guidance of the society made 16 animation films,” he shared.

Although ICFFI has gained the status as one of the best festivals in the world, there is scope for strengthening it and CFSI is open to suggestions, he adds. “Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Information and Ministry of Education should work in co-ordination with each other to add supplementary reading of fine arts and performing arts along with academics as it happens in Japan, Korea, China and Iran. CFSI should network with other societies across India to organise private screenings of children’s films and this can be done even in commercial theatres where the film can be screened before the morning show and get tax exemption.” he suggests.

A few years ago, CFSI AP used to rent films and screen it in every district. This practice can be revived, thinks Veda Kumar. The fact that there are 123 entries in the ‘Little Directors’ segment that is exclusive to Indian panorama is a heartening aspect, he added.
