This Friday, film lovers will get to watch a few popular and critically acclaimed new age Bengali feature films, on big screen; thanks to the initiative of a few well meaning film lovers from the organisation, ‘Bengalis In Hyderabad’. BIH is conducting a three-day film festival titled ‘Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival’ (HBFF) at Prasad Labs from June 26 to 28. BIH is a cultural group run by nonresident Bengalis to help in cultural exchange. The festival started in 2014.
This year, the film festival starts on June 26 and will feature eight award winning and much admired new-age films along with the India premier of one movie. To cater to the non- Bengali speaking audience, all the films will have English subtitles. “Riding on the success of HBFF 2014, we have come up with a new theme, which is the interpersonal relationship of human beings, and carefully selected eight films that have depicted different flavours ofour relationships and lives. We will conduct a panel discussion titled ‘Content is the real star’.
As in these times, even new independent filmmakers adhering to the ‘content is king’ policy are making award winning films,” says Partha Pratim Mallik, convenor, HBBF. This year the fest will kick start with ‘Nirbashito’ by Churni Ganguly, which also won her the National Film Award for her directorial debut.
The movie is based on author Taslima Nasreen's life and her days in exile outside her country, Bangladesh. However, to an extent the film has been fictionalised. The other films, which will be featured in the festival are ‘Chhotoder Chhobi’ by Kaushik Ganguly, ‘Nirbaak’ by Srijit Mukherjee, ‘Kadambari’ by Suman Ghosh, ‘Jogajog’ by Sekhar Das, ‘Bit Nun’ by Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha, ‘Family Album’ by Mainak Bhaumick and ‘Teen Kahon’ by Bauddhayan Mukherji.
Mallik adds, “Like last year, we bring to you one film that has not yet released for public viewing in Bengal. Additionally, ‘Nirbashito’ has in its cap the National Award for the Best Bengali Film.
‘Chhotoder Chhobi’ also picked up a Silver Lotus for the Best Film on a Social Issue. It is rare indeed for a husband (Koushik Ganguly) and wife (Churni Ganguly in her directorial debut) to independently win awards. But for an aficionado, the most rewarding part is that both the films are so different from each other and uniquely focus on experiences of two sections of individuals, who are integral to our society and yet so distant from our consciousness.” - HBFF will commence on June 26 and will conclude on June 28 at Prasads Multiplex.
