Hyderabad: Top Tollywood producers used to secure the Tamil dubbing rights and then sell them to various distributors and exhibitors across Telangana and AP to make a decent profit, but now some distributors have pulled the plug on the practice for good.

“Now distributors of 20-odd districts in two Telugu States are forming syndicates and pooling up funds and directly negotiating with Tamil filmmakers, who made some novel films, and securing the rights,” revealed distributor and exhibitor Jawahar, who released dubbed film “Dora” starring Satyaraj recently.

  • Form syndicate and start negotiating directly with Tamil film producers and secure rights for dubbing

“Every film cannot be a success but margin of loss is less and manageable and also distributors’ syndicate is a path-breaking concept since we can also at least get producer’s margin and test our creative judgement with minimum risk and maximum profits, if it turns to be a winner,” he added.

It seems that the 20-crore hit “Buchigadu” has set the trend of content-driven Tamil movies and over 30 small films like “Metro”, “Iravi” and films of Nayantara and Vijay Antony are in for big demand. “It is true that money-spinner “Buchigadu” paved the way for content-driven dubbed films. And also dubbed film is a ready-made product and proved its potential in one language, so we can buy them for a small amount and release it after spending some money on dubbing and publicity within a month or two.

Instead of making a Telugu film and facing the tantrums of superstars and woes of over budgeting and other risks, going for dubbed films is a better option,” said distributor Vallabhaneni Ashok, who felt that some Telugu stars were no more crowd-pullers.

However, the craze for Tamil stars has not subsided after “Kabali”. Films of Tamil stars Surya, “Karthi” and “Vikram” are also selling like hot cakes. With Karthi’s “Kashmora” reportedly being bought for Rs 9 crore, Singham 3 is pegged at Rs 20 crore.

Leading distributor, who bought Vikram’s “Iru Mugan” for Rs 5.5 crore added that “Vikram is one of the finest actors in India and has gained a huge following among Telugu viewers. Since Tamil stars try to experiment with different roles, their charm and popularity is unshakeable” he concluded.
