Delhi Gang-Rape Case: High Court Confirms Death Penalty For All Accused. The Delhi High Court on Thursday confirmed the death sentence of the four convicts in the gruesome gang-rape of a para-medical student in a moving bus in the capital on December 16, 2012.
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday confirmed the death sentence of the four convicts in the gruesome gang-rape of a para-medical student in a moving bus in the capital on December 16, 2012. A trial court had earlier convicted the four and awarded the capital punishment. Under the law, the Delhi High Court has to confirm the death sentence awarded by the trial court, before it can be implemented. However, the convicts can move the Supreme Court. Justice Reva Khetrapal and Justice Pratibha Rani said, “Death reference is accepted. Death sentence awarded by the trial court is affirmed. The appeals of the convicts are dismissed.” The Bench confirmed the sentence of Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh, saying the offence falls in the category of rarest of the rare, and upheld their conviction. The HC had reserved its verdict on January 3 after a marathon hearing on the sentence reference sent to it by the trial court and the appeals of the four convicts.
Four of the six men arrested for the heinous attack were found guilty of rape and murder by the fast-track court and were sentenced to death on September 13, 2013. Fifth accused, Ram Singh, was found dead in his cell in Tihar Jail in the Capital in March, 2013 and the proceedings against him were abated. Sixth accused, the juvenile, was on August 31, 2013, convicted and sentenced to a maximum of three years in a reformation home by the Juvenile Justice Board. Parents of the young girl were present in Delhi High Court. The girl’s father said, “We are very happy. This verdict will affect many other cases." Around them people held up posters and raised slogans against the convicts. Mother of the young girl said, “Hume pura nyaay tabhi milega, jab sab phaansi par latkaye jaayenge (We will get justice only when all of them will be hanged). We have got full faith in the judiciary. We had expected this verdict. But the ultimate satisfaction will be when the convicts meet to their ultimate fate.”
On December 16, 2012, a Sunday evening, Ram Singh, Vinay, Akshay, Pawan, Mukesh and a juvenile gang-raped the girl in a moving bus. They also assaulted her male friend, and later threw them both, stripped, on the roadside.
The girl succumbed to her injuries on December 29, 2012, in a Singapore hospital.
