Hyderabad: A constable, Eshwar Rao, was killed and a sub-inspector seriously injured when a fake currency gang attacked the cops with sharp weapons in Majidpur village in Shamirpet area near here late on Friday night. One of the gang members died when police opened fire in retaliation. Rao was a native of Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh.

The incident occurred around midnight on Friday when a police team of Balanagar police station comprising SI Venkat Reddy and others reached a dhaba at Majidpur crossroads following a tip-off about a gang involved in circulation of fake currency notes.

According to Cyberabad Police Commissioner C V Anand, when the eight-member police team reached the spot to nab the gang, the latter attacked them with sharp weapons. Caught unawares, police soon recovered themselves and opened fire on the criminals, in which one Mustafa was killed. Three others managed to escape.

A grievously injured Eshwar Rao died on way to hospital. Venkat Reddy sustained deep stab injuries and was admitted to Yashoda Hospital. His condition is said to be critical.

The Police Commissioner visited the spot. He said a special team had been formed to nab prime suspect Ellam Goud, his associate Srikanth and another accomplice. Ellam belongs to Siddipet town in Medak district and was released from jail a couple of months back. He is said to be involved in thefts and robberies in Karnataka state and Medak district.

Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy who visited Yasodha Hospital said that the TS government would extend all financial assistance to the family of the slain constable and a government job to one of the members of his family would also be given. The government would bear the entire medical expenditure of the SI. He also visited the crime spot and warned that stern action would be initiated against the accused involved in the attack.

Srikakulam: Eswara Rao, the police constable who was killed on Friday night in an attack by a gang of offenders involved in fake currency note circulation at Shamirpet, in Ranga reddy district, hailed from a poor family of Salantri village of Sarabujjila mandal in Srikakulam district. He was the youngest of two brothers and a sister.

Rao’s parents, Mallesu and Ramanamma, are labourers. His elder brother and sister are married. The parents were in the process of looking for matrimonial alliances for him. His brother, Ramanamurthy, is working in a factory in Hyderabad. Mallesu and Ramanamma were planning to take rest after Rao got a government job. They had toiled for years to bring up the family. They are shattered following the death of the family’s main supporter. Rao was known to be honest in discharge of duty. Villagers said it was a matter pride that he was recently transferred to the Task Force. Salanti residents are mourning the loss of a brave-heart who was the pride of the village.
