Hyderabad: Two employees died on the spot and at least 10 workers were injured while four reported missing in an explosion that occurred at the Gulf Oil Corporation Limited Company, which makes detonators, at Kukatpally in Hyderabad on Monday, police said.

The deceased were identified as Amar, 23, and Shravan, 30, both employees of the IDL. At least 10 other workers received serious injuries and four reported missing till reports last came in. According to the police, the high intensity explosion took place at D-1 sector of the unit around 3.50 pm at the explosives division of the Gulf Oil Corporation Limited, when the employees were working near the reactor. A building collapsed under the impact of the blast, police said.

Flames started emanating from the D-1 sector and spread to other areas. Fire tenders from Kukatpally and Jeedimetla rushed to the spot and were trying to douse the flames when the reports last came in. According to a press release from the Apollo Group, the injured persons who received severe burn injuries were shifted to Apollo DRDO, Kanchanbagh are identified as Surender Reddy, 24, (40 per cent burns), Abdul Saleem, 59, (36 per cent), Krishna Swamy, 59, ( 80 per cent) and Muthyal Rao, 56, (70 per cent) while six were shifted to Apollo Health City, Jubilee Hills are identified as Purushotham, 30, (left arm injury and eye laceration), Lakshman, 28, (15 per cent), M Raju (hearing loss in left ear), Mallesh, 48, ( 7 per cent), Ramulu, 40, (right eye and head injury) and B Prakash (minor burns).

Home Minister Naini Narasimha, Serilingampally MLA Arekapudi Gandhi, Kukatpally MLA M Krishna Rao, Cyberabad Commissioner, CV Anand and DCP (Madhapur) Kartikeya visited the spot and directed the officials to take measures to rescue the victims and ensure medical treatment. Meanwhile, irate employees, family members and workers staged a dharna in front of the main gate of the unit protesting against the management’s failure.
