70 year old Omani national held for marrying teenager
A 70-year-old Omani national was arrested by South Zone police on Friday on charges of ‘marrying’ a minor girl in Kanchanbagh area. Cops have also arrested four others, including the mother of the girl and the qazi who performed the nikah. According to police, the Oman national, Md Khamis came to the city last Saturday on a tourist visa and was staying in a Old City hotel.

Cops have also arrested four others, including the mother of the girl and the qazi who performed the nikah. According to police, the Oman national, Md Khamis came to the city last Saturday on a tourist visa and was staying in a Old City hotel.
With the help of agents Asim , Saif and the mother of the 17-year-old victim, the Omani contacted a qazi and convinced him to perform the contract marriage after he allegedly negotiated for a sum of Rs 1 lakh. Acting on a tip-off, police swung into action and nabbed Khamis, Asim, Saif and the qazi from a hotel in Bandlaguda where the papers of contract marriage were about to be signed.
While police have slapped charges of Prohibition of Child Marriages Act on Khamis, the victim’s mother has been booked under the Prohibition of Child Marriages Act. The police officials attributed to the increasing number of such cases due to poverty and illiteracy and appealed to parents to be careful while performing marriages of their daughters with foreigners.
