A 27-year-old High School teacher from Gachibowli was conned by a Foreign National in the name of love robbing a sum of Rs 18 lakh from her.

Three months earlier, the teacher befriended the foreign national on an online chat forum who claimed to be a geologist and fell in love with him through numerous chat sessions. However, by the time she realized that the man who had promised to marry her was a fraud, she was conned.

Cyber crime ACP S. Jayaram informed that the man had told her that he sent a package with jewellery and valuable gifts worth several lakhs through courier, asking her to receive it once she gets a call from the service providers. When she did receive a call from a person claiming to be an official from the Customs department in Delhi and informed her that she had to deposit money in order to clear the package as it contained gold, gifts and foreign currency, said the ACP.

However, after depositing Rs 18 lakh in various accounts towards customs clearance charges, different taxes, RBI clearance and an anti terrorism fund, she realized it was a scam as she never received her package which is when she approached the Cyberabad Cybercrime police, said Mr Jayaram.

The Cyber Crime Police are already investigating two similar cases that occurred last week and Cyber Scammers in the name of love luring unmarried professionals and MNC employees with wedding proposals are creating a nuisance for the police. Particularly the women techies and MNC workers are being targeted through Facebook as they are extorting money from victims after sending gifts.
