Hyderabad: A 51-year-old businessman from Yousufguda was arrested by the Gandhi Nagar police for cheating elderly women on the pretext of providing loans on Monday. The police recovered gold ornaments weighing 14 tolas worth Rs 4 lakh and made proposals to initiate Preventive Detention Act against the accused.

The accused Palli Babu Rao from Yousufguda has been involved in as many as 110 cases of cheating since 1995. He has been indulging in a similar modus operandi, targeting old aged women and luring them on the pretext of arranging loans. After winning their confidence, he used to take the old women to lonely places on his motorcycle and steal their ornaments.

Babu Rao was earlier arrested by the Mahankali police for committing several offences earlier and was also convicted by the courts. After release, he again committed thefts in Hyderabad and Cyberabad commissionerates, said Chikkadpally ACP J Narsaiah, in a press note.

The ACP said that the accused was ‘wanted’ in six cases of cheating in Bowenpally, Amberpet, Chilkalguda, Kacheguda, Hayathnagar and Gandhi Nagar police stations. “We appeal to public not to fall prey to the conmen. Several cases of similar modus operandi are being reported in city.

Please inform the police through Dial-100 or visit a nearest police station to complain about such persons,” the ACP said adding that PD Act has been proposed to be initiated against the accused as conviction has not helped in deterring his illegal activities.
