Hyderabad: Hardly a week passes without the news of one or other from the city falling victim to swindlers and losing huge sums of money.

The latest being the episode in which a city-based businessman was swindled of Rs 75 lakh allegedly by a Nigerian national living in Delhi.

The police said the Nigerian had wangled the money from the businessman by promising to provide spoiled American dollars and also expensive solvents to make the former tidy.

Cyberabad Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crimes) B Naveen Kumar on Friday said the city businessman, Mohammed Ibrahim,

lodged a complaint with the police on August 28 that a Nigerian, named Mike Newwili, had swindled him of R 75 lakh.

The Nigerian, according to the complaint, had ensnared him by promising to give him spoiled American currency.

He also promised to provide an expensive solvent to make the spoiled currency neat, the police said.

The police quoted the businessman as saying that he had mortgaged his father’s property and paid the money to the swindler.

The investigation revealed that a Nigerian, identified as David Fletcher alias Austine Ese Aiwejhoe alias Richard, 30, was the kingpin in the racket.

The police said the Nigerian had been cheating people in the name of lotteries and promising to secure jobs for the youth.

The accused was found using three SIM cards obtained from UK to call gullible and ensnare them, the DCP said.

A team led by Cyber Crime inspector Riayazuddin arrested accused Richard in Delhi and brought him on transit warrant to Hyderabad to be produced before the local court.

A passport issued by Federal Republic of Nigeria, a mobile phone, one data card, a laptop and an USB drive were seized by the team, the DCP said.
