Hyderabad: The task force police on Friday arrested two gangs involved in diversion of Public Distribution Scheme commodities and illegally selling them. As much as 261 quintals of PDS rice and 110 quintals of Sugar were seized in separate incidents, the police said.

Raids were conducted by the police and Civil Supply Authorities at private storages in Golconda, Asif Nagar and Mangalhat. They apprehended three persons and seized PDS rice, some wheat and sugar bags.

The accused Mohd Habeeb, 55, owns a rice business at Golconda. He and his brother Nayeem, a grocery shop owner from Mangalhat and another Jameel buy the PDS rice for Rs 10 per kg from Murad of Asif Nagar, who in turn buys the rice from the beneficiaries at Rs 5 per kg, said Task Force DCP B Limba Reddy.

The DCP said Habeeb and his brothers used to sell about 40 to 50 quintals of PDS rice and were earning Rs 75,000 through the illegal sale. For the past eight months, they have been into illegal sale of PDS rice by procuring it from other agents Anil, Babulal, Mohsin, Habeeb, Salman and others.

Accused Habeeb was earlier apprehended by Assistant Supply Officer of Chevella Division in 2014. In a similar incident, three persons were arrested and 220 bags of PDS sugar were seized by the police, when the latter intercepted two vans containing the commodity under Shaninayathgunj police station limits.

Thorough investigation in the case revealed that the sugar was purchased from Ravi Enterprises located at Hayathnagar. On Friday, the management of Ravi Enterprises sold 110 quintals of PDS sugar for Rs 15 per kg to V Santosh Kumar and V Rakesh, who would sell the same at Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg.

The supervisor of the storage DCS Nageshwar Rao along with Santhosh and Rakesh were arrested and the vans used for transportation of the goods were seized, DCP Limba Reddy added.
