​Hyderabad: The city police on Tuesday busted a five-member gang, hailing from Delhi, for illegally withdrawing money from the bank accounts of several persons at ATMs.

The gang used to target the bank customers, mostly senior citizens, on the pretext of helping them withdraw money from ATMs, and they diverted attention and committed thefts, said police.

The accused Syed Azaruddin alias Azar Ali (23), Syed Ashad Ali (25), Intikhab Alam, Moahmmed Shabaz Khan (24) and Md Abdul Quddus (26), acquired knowledge of committing crimes through internet. After executing their sinister plans successfully in Delhi, they landed in Hyderabad to commit offencs, said West Zone DCP A Venkateshwara Rao.

“They used GPS to identify the ATMs located in remote areas and used to insert a thin silver plate into the machine to see that the ATM got stuck. When a customer was unable to draw money from the ATM, they used to offer help and notes down the PIN and withdraw money,” said DCP at a press conference.

On a tip-off, the teams arrested the accused near Tadband Cross roads and recovered Rs 1.5 lakh cash, strips used to freeze the ATMs, he said adding that the gang had committed seven offences in Hyderabad and siphoned off Rs 4.32 lakh.
