Hyderabad: In a tragic incident, two labourers were killed and six others injured when newly built slab of a dilapidated building collapsed within hours of construction in the Old City of Hyderabad.

The building is being constructed illegally, according to the police. The incident occurred at around 1.30 am on Saturday when the roof of a two storied building constructed by Maheshwari Seva Trust at Kabootarkhana in Hussaini Alam area collapsed. As many as eight workers were trapped under the debris. Two of them died on the spot while six others suffered grievous injuries.

The slab was constructed at 11 pm on Friday and it collapsed within hours. The building contractor did not calculate the centring load on the pillars and so the slab of the second floor collapsed. The trust was constructing a school in the dilapidated building.

Hussaini Alam inspector G Shyam Sundar said the deceased were identified as Anand (33) and Venkataiah (40) hailing from Mahbubnagar district. They came to work as labourers at the construction site, he said.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials said the building was being constructed illegally, as the land was in dispute. A case had been pending in the court regarding the ownership of the land, the officials said.

“The trust does not have permission to construct the building. A case is pending in the court regarding the ownership of the land. The land belongs to the GHMC and the trust was issued notices for claiming the land,” said a GHMC official who inspected the spot.

The police said the injured workers were shifted to Osmania General Hospital for treatment and were stated to be out of danger. However, a case has been registered against the management of the trust for causing death due to negligence and investigations are on.
