Hyderabad: A 24-year-old tea vendor from Jharkhand died after falling into an uncovered sewerage pit at Madhapur late on Saturday night.

Moti Yadav (24), who works in Rock N Grill hotel as a tea master was returning to his room after completion of duties, when he fell in to the ‘uncovered’ pit. Police said that at about 9.30 pm, Yadav accidentally slipped into a pit while walking along the road that was covered with ankle-deep rainwater.

A police source quoting a pedestrian said, “There was heavy water logging on the main road due to incessant rains on Saturday.

The victim Yadav was walking on the water-logged road opposite to Kassani Gr hotel in Madhapur and drowned after falling in to the uncovered pit before a passerby could hold his hand.

Though passersby and police attempted to rescue Yadav, it was late. The police retrieved the body sent it to Gandhi hospital for an autopsy.”

“Due to heavy rain, the pit was filled with water. It was an under-construction sewerage line. It was recently dug to lay new sewerage pipeline. There were some electric wires present in the pit. He could have suffered an electric shock too,” said Madhapur DSI T Sridhar.

The SI said that passersby noticed him falling in the pit and tried rushed to rescue him, but he drowned within seconds. “There was no proper signage near the pit and it was risky for a person to walk,” the SI said.

A case has been booked under section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of IPC against the contractor who had undertaken the sewer line construction work. “Further probe is on,” the SI said.
