Hyderabad: The Special Investigation Team (SIT), appointed on Wednesday, took into custody five persons believed to be close associates of the renegade Maoist-turned-gangster Nayeemuddin, who was killed in gunfire with police on Monday. The police also took custody of two women Farhana and Afshan from Chanchalguda Central Women’s Prison for questioning.

The SIT which began investigating into the dealings of Nayeem and his modus operandi, took into custody his bodyguard Riaz from one of the apartments in Hyderabad and his close relative, Saleem, from his residence in Hayathnagar. During the questioning, Riaz revealed that Nayeem was about start his own news channel and had paid Rs 3 crore as advance to a Nalgonda-based media person.

The investigating team also took into custody Sridhar Goud and Balram who were believed to be under the direct command of one his close relatives and second in command of the gang, Faheem, who is still at large.

Faheem who was involved in land settlements used to organise dealings at a den in Tuljabhavani area of Injapur in Vanasthalipuram with the help of the duo. The police also identified that Faheem was running four more dens under the police station limits of Hayathnagar, Vanasthalipuram and L B Nagar.

Interestingly, Faheem’s associates were mostly his classmates from school days. The police took into possession about Rs 40 lakh in cash and three guns from the den on Wednesday.

Cyberabad Commissioner (East) Mahesh Bhagwat told that the police formed a special team to nab Faheem. He also asked victims of the gang to provide more information towards getting justice by providing leads on members of the gang to police.

He asked the general public to leave a message or call on 9490617111 for providing information on the gang or its activities.

Meanwhile Cyberabad Commissioner (West) Naveen Chand said that one Md Khaja was taken into custody. Khaja who was running a guest house of Nayeem in Goa would be sent to remand on Thursday. The police seized Rs 4 lakh cash from his possession.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by IG, North Zone Y Nagi Reddy probing into dealings of Nayeemuddin recovered Rs 2.8 crore and 1.9 kg gold from his residence in Alkapuri township on the outskirts of the city.

After five hours of search, they also found details of 78 plots from the building, which was verified online. “More details cannot be revealed at this juncture as investigation is in progress,” said Y Nagi Reddy.
