Visakhapatnam: Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths arrested Circle Inspector of One Town police station in Vizianagaram P Sobhan Babu for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 3 lakh from a victim in a kidnap case he was investigating.
The ACB also arrested another person Rahim, who allegedly acted as a middleman between the inspector and the complainant.
The complainant, Yerra Eswara Rao, a resident of Pradeep Nagar in Viziangaram Town, is a realtor. Eswara Rao had some differences with his business partner Anni Srinivasa Rao. On May 5 night, Eswara Rao was kidnapped by two home guards Burli Srinivasa Rao (31), Bai Laxmana Rao (32) and Anni Srinivasa Rao.
The police inspector Sobhan Babu registered a case based on the complaint from Eswara Rao’s wife Venkata Ratna Kumari. The kidnappers released Eswara Rao on the night of May 6, after taking some documents and promissory notes from Eswara Rao.
Sobhan Babu has demanded Rs 5 lakh bribe from Eswara Rao for arrest of the kidnappers and to return the documents and promissory notes to him. The CI had taken Rs 2 lakh on May 8 from the victim through Rahim after arresting the kidnappers including the two home guards and Srinivasa Rao. The inspector has been harassing the victim for remaining bribe of Rs 3 lakh.
Fed up with the harassment, the victim approached ACB officials a few days back. After verifying the facts, the central investigation unit of ACB led by DSP S V Prasada Rao laid a trap on Sunday. The inspector was caught red-handed by ACB while accepting Rs 3 lakh from the complainant through Rahim in front of the One-Town police station.
The ACB team also conducted raids on the house of the tainted police officer and recovered Rs 2 lakh cash, which he took from the victim. Sobhan Babu was booked under Prevention of Corruption Act. He will be produced in the court on Monday.
