Target Olympic Podium. According to Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports Sarbananda Sonowal, the government has launched a programme namely Target Olympic Podium under the National Sports Development Fund.

According to Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports Sarbananda Sonowal, the government has launched a programme namely Target Olympic Podium under the National Sports Development Fund. The programme is for identification of athletes who are potential medal winners in 2016/2020 Olympics. Financial Assistance is available for such athletes from National Sports Development Fund for training and competition for preparation for Olympics 2016/2020.

Sonowal informs that 75 athletes are to be benefitted for Olympics 2016 out of which 45 athletes have been identified till now. Rs 30 crores approximately have been earmarked for preparation of the said 45 athletes subject to stipulated conditions. More athletes are to be identified for Olympics 2020. In order to support India’s best medal prospects for 2016 and 2020 Olympics and other major sporting events up to 2020 Olympics, the Ministry the started the Target Olympic Podium Scheme.

An Elite Athletes Identification Committee has been set up under the chairpersonship of Anurag Thakur, Member of Parliament, and comprising Rahul Dravid, Pullella Gopichand, Abhinav Bindra and Manisha Malhotra as members among others to evaluate and select talented potential medal prospects for 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games for support under the TOP Scheme. The focused disciplines will be Athletics, Archery, Badminton, Boxing, Wrestling and Shooting.

Promising sportspersons are being identified and provided with all the requisite facilities for their preparations, such as nutritious diet, food supplements, equipments, state-of-art infrastructure, boarding and lodging, coaching from Indian and foreign coaches/support staff, scientific & medical support, sports kit etc. besides financial assistance for their training abroad and participation in International Competitions in India and abroad.

Under the Scheme, 45 sportspersons in the disciplines of Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Shooting, Wrestling and Sailing have been selected so far for their customized training. MYAS had sought bids from public sector insurance companies for providing insurance cover to athletes under the TOP scheme for indoor medical treatment up to 10 lakh and insurance of Rs 50 lakh in case of death or permanent disability due to accident till Olympics 2016.
