Soon people would be able search for a particular arte fact in the Salar Jung Museum (SJM) and get all details including the material used, name of the artist, country of origin, age and the year. The digitisation process is part of the Ministry of culture, Government of India initiative which included SJM as part of the project to make available collections of the museums on a single platform over the internet.

The artefacts being digitised of other museums include Indian Museum, Victoria Memorial Hall, National Museum, Allahabad Museum, SJM, National Gallery of Modern Art-Mumbai and Bengaluru, Archaeological Museum- Nagarjunakonda and at Goa. Work at the SJM is going on at a fast pace. “About 8,500 objects have already been digitised out of the 46,000 at the museum.

SJM is ahead and has had a quick start in comparison to other museums,” informed SJM director A Nagender Reddy. The earlier target was to complete the digitization work of 6,000 0bjects a year, which has been increased to 8,000 this year onwards. The SJM acquired the software ‘Jatan’ which was developed by Pune CDAC.

The digitisation will be of great help to research scholars and students. Nagender says, “In the past scholars would travel from far off places but once digitised they would get all the information at a click of a button. What is interesting is each photo of a particular object would have the metadata too so a person would be able to get all the information.”

The digitisation process started last year and the SJM authorities have set a 2018 deadline to complete and cover all the objects. A senior official said that it is a painstaking job and some of the objects are rare. Though time is a constraint, one cannot compromise on the objects.
