Flipkart has plans to introduce a new ‘Image search’ feature on its mobile app. The feature is aimed at its fashion shoppers and will let them search for a product based on an image they might have seen.

The feature is currently in beta stage and Flipkart will roll it out to its mobile app. Users can click a picture or use a photo on their phones to find fashion products of same color, pattern or style on Flipkart, says the company.

In addition, users can browse a range of similar products by tapping directly on the product they like on Flipkart. “Discovering a fashion product online varies from user to user and is more complex as compared to other categories.

A lot of fashion purchase decisions are influenced by similar products seen by users. The image search feature provides a way to find similar products on Flipkart as well as reduces the search/ browsing time, making the overall product discovery and shopping experience simple.” said Flipkart’s Chief Product Officer Punit Soni in a press statement.

Flipkart says that 75 per cent users access the site through their smartphones and that the mobile app dominates the total visits on the platform. Flipkart’s mobile first strategy is nothing new. Myntra, the fashion portal, owned by Flipkart went mobile only in May with the desktop version of the site getting shut down in a bold move. With Image Search coming first to mobile, Flipkart is just sticking with this mobile first outlook.
