Garbage has piled up everywhere in the city due to municipal workers’ strike. The stink emanated from the uncleared garbage is unbearable. Though the municipal workers’ strike entered the sixth day on Thursday, no concrete measures have been taken by the State Government to resolve it.

The overflowing garbage bin and piled up garbage reflect poor sanitary conditions

Sanitation in the city deteriorated further following heavy rain on Wednesday night. Stagnant pools formed at several places as the uncleared garbage obstructed the free flow of rainwater into drains. Culverts were clogged and overflowing due to indiscriminate dumping of garbage by households in view of the VMC workers' strike.

Despite the announcement of Mayor Koneru Sridhar at the VMC council meeting a few days ago that private sanitation workers would be appointed on a daily wage basis to clear garbage in the city, the municipal corporation officials were finding it difficult to mobilise workers as they were facing stiff resistance from the striking staff to their attempts.

Realising the gravity of the situation, the Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) came forward to extend its help to the VMC in clearance of garbage. The special teams set up by the VMC for maintenance of sanitation are struggling hard to keep the city clean due to lack of adequate work force.

Admitting the prevalence of poor sanitary conditions in the city, VMC Chief Medical Officer M Gopi Nayak said, Not even one fourth of the regular workers are attending duties. Out of the total strength of 4,000 sanitation workers, 800 are only cooperating with the VMC authorities in maintenance of hygiene in the city.

In all, 176 sanitation workers attended duties in the morning shift and 200 in the evening shift today. We are focusing on maintenance of sanitation in slum areas with the limited work force. The VMC is taking all precautions to prevent the outbreak of diseases in the wake of piling up of garbage in residential areas due to the strike.’’

Speaking on the clean and green campaign of the VMC, the Chief Medical Officer said, ``The municipal corporation is organising awareness programmes on Tuesdays and Fridays to educate people living in slums on the importance of keeping their premises and surroundings tidy. It is also organising medical camps in slums regularly to prevent the outbreak of diseases.’’
