To mark the World Brain Day, KIMS Hospitals announced that the epilepsy group from the neurosciences department has performed more than 500 epilepsy surgeries. This is the highest number of brain surgeries for epilepsy condition performed across any corporate hospital in the country.

Dr Sita Jayalakshmi, senior consultant neurologist, KIMS Hospitals, said, “Approximately 60 per cent of the people with epilepsy suffer from focal epilepsy syndromes. In about 15 per cent of these, the seizures are not adequately controlled with anticonvulsive drugs and such people are potential candidates for surgical treatment and major proportion are children aged 18 years old or less.

Epilepsy surgery in carefully chosen persons with epilepsy can result in either seizure freedom or a marked (>90 per cent) reduction in seizures in approximately 70 per cent with uncontrolled seizures. Advances in technology, imaging, neurosurgery, and neuroanaesthesia have improved the outcomes of surgery for persons with uncontrolled epilepsy.

Early surgery improves the quality of life, cognitive and developmental outcome and allows the persons with epilepsy to lead a normal life and contribute to the society on par with others. For persons with ‘surgically remedial epilepsy’ surgery should be offered as a procedure of choice, rather than as a treatment of last resort.’’

Dr Manas Kumar Panigrahi, senior consultant neurosurgeon at the hospital, said, “There are many myths about epilepsy and its treatment. Hopefully this distinctive achievement of the neurosciences team at KIMS will help address myths like there is no treatment available.

Though epilepsy is the leading cause of neuro deaths around the world, medical science has advanced and today treatment is available for most complex situations. It gives us immense satisfaction that we have performed 500 epilepsy surgeries with a favorable outcome in more than 70 per cent of the people affected.

The risk of epilepsy surgery is less than 1 per cent which is definitely less than that of uncontrolled epilepsies.”
