Many cities across the globe practice vehicle holidays where cars or bikes are not allowed in specific areas. Bogota in Colombia has been a pioneer in observing car-free days. On Thursday, TSRTC ran seventy additional buses and officials were seen monitoring the movement and frequency of buses at various bus stops in Hitec City and Gachibowli.
In addition, volunteers from participating organisations were present at various intersections/bus stops to encourage and thank those commuting by alternate modes of transport. Expressing his delight on the response, HYSEA president Ramesh Loganathan said, “Our target for first Car Free Thursday was about 10,000-15,000 car commuters shifting to buses and other forms of transport.
We are happy to report that there was visible impact, as there was huge increase in carpooling, increase in bus ridership, people walking to and cycling to work.” “Though it’s early to comment on the numbers, as we are in the process of receiving reports from various quarters, we expect that the huge interest it has generated both regionally and nationally will help create a bigger impact in coming days,” he added.
The initiative, which will be a consistent programme on Thursdays every week, is a voluntary initiative from the IT industry. The programme aims to free up space and solve parking problems in companies, ease traffic on roads, help pedestrians and cyclists and reduce pollution.
