Keep abreast of latest technologies and adopt to newer techniques was the message given by Prof Khursheed F Moos, OBE of the University of Glasgow to the 300 plus delegates attending the three-day conference organised by Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India (AOMSI) Telangana State branch in association with Army Dental College, Secunderabad at Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute on Saturday.
Prof Khursheed delivered the Prof Tajmal Hussain Memorial lecture.“Innovation is the key and changing with the times is the mantra that all Maxillofacial Surgeons should be aware of,” said Prof Khursheed. “The role of maxillofacial surgeons is gaining prominence as the world’s largest number of traffic accidents take place in India,” opined Bal Reddy, president, AOMSI Telangana.
Lt Gen T K Bandhopadyaya, the chief guest on the occasion, advised the 100-odd post graduate students to keep working and not look for financial rewards. “If one is true to ones heart and does good work adulation and money would automatically follow,” he said.
Almost 10-20 per cent of the casualties have some injury in facial region opined Brig Dr Sujit Kumar Bhandari who presented a paper on blast injuries. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a specialty that deals with conditions, defects and deals with the mouth, jaw and face.
Dr Prof Nanda Gopal Vura, general secretary, AOMSI Telangana, said that the conference aims to not only inspire budding maxillofacial surgeons but also spread awareness on road traffic awareness.During the course of the conference more than 24 presentations on trauma, cosmetic surgery, dissection and reconstruction would be presented, he informed. The conference ends on Sunday.
Awareness on safe driving
“The maximum number of casualties in road accidents suffers from some form of facial injury and in most cases the severity of injury could be less only if people took proper precautions,” said Sanjeev Nair, president, AOMSI.
As part of awareness programme, AOMSI at the national level brought out a three minute video ‘Face It’ which is shown in schools, colleges and universities. The video since it was posted on Facebook has attracted over three million views but a lot more needs to be done said Sanjeev Nair.
