The GWMC in-charge Commissioner Shahid Masood said the measure was aimed at sending a warning to those violating the norms related to the plastic ban. A decision has been taken in the past to book criminal cases against the sellers as well as the users who violating the rules.

Usage of plastic bags harms the environment. Decomposing of plastic products takes hundreds of years of time and continuing to clog our waterways, oceans, forests, and other natural habitats. It also proves costly to the lives of animals if they mistakenly consume plastic, he explained.

Sale or usage of plastic covers less than 50 microns thickness has been a punishable offense, according to the Central government’s plastic management rules. The GWMC wants to implement the rules in a strict manner, Masood explained.

The GWMC has been conducting surprise inspections and penalising the violators. Recently raids were conducted on 11 shops at Kashibugga junction in the city and penalties were imposed on the shop owners, who were found selling plastic covers below 50 micron thickness.

The Corporation authorities with an intention to make Warangal plastic-free have been asking the owners of kirana shop, meat shops, fruit shops and people to use either paper bags or jute bags.

The sale of banned plastic covers could attract fine ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000, while citizens is found using them have to pay Rs 250 to Rs 500 as first offense and they have face to criminal cases, Masood explained.

However, both the sellers and users opine have a different take at the issue. ‘Firstly the manufacturing of the paper/jute/cloth bags should have to be taken up on larger scale.

The government is fully committed to ban plastic it should supply non-plastic bags cheaper rate prices to the consumers,’ opined a trader Ch Ramesh of Mandi Bazar in Warangal.
