Warangal: The Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) has set itself a huge target of making the city an Open Defecation-Free (ODF) by June 2, the Telangana State Formation Day.
In its pursuit of ODF tag, the GWMC is mulling to tie up with the Delhi-based CAYA that has experience and expertise in constructing individual and community sanitary latrines (ISL) with a proven track record in Jaipur, Jabalpur and other cities.
Most importantly, the agency has infrastructural capacity of constructing 500 ISLs a day. The agency charges Rs 16,500 per each ISL, it’s learnt.
The track record of the CAYA is absolutely alluring for the GWMC which has not much time left for its ambitious plan.
Speaking to The Hans India, Mayor Nannapuneni Narender said: “We have verified the workmanship of the CAYA and the design of the ISLs which it constructs. We have decided to rope in the company and within a short time the works will begin.”
As of now, the Greater Warangal has about 1.70 lakh households, of which 1.20 lakh are in the tri-cities of Warangal-Hanamkonda-Kazipet and the rest in merged villages.
According to a recent survey conducted by the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA), there are at least 30,000 households without ISLs. This apart, the city has laid its focus on public toilets.
“Number-wise, the city has reached its target of 40 public toilets, however, there was a need for another 10,” P Rajmohan Reddy, who provides sanitation-related technical support to GWMC, the team coordinator from the Administrative Staff College of India said.
Meanwhile, it’s learnt that of the 17,000 sanctioned ISLs, 4,000 have been completed and the others are in various stages of work. In all, the authorities have to sanction about 29,000 ISLs in the city.
