Nalgonda: The water war between the two Telugu-speaking States came to the fore again on Monday with the officials of both states getting into an altercation over the share of Krishna water.

War of words broke out between the officials when the Telangana officials went to stop the release of water to right canal at control room as AP’s quota came to complete.

According to official information, the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB), which met on February 3, after estimating the available water in Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam reservoirs allocated 75 tmcft of water to both Telangana and AP. Of the 75 tmcft, AP got a share of 22.93 tmcft.

Of the 22.93 tmcft, left over 2 tmcft is being released at 7,000 cusecs a day to right canal from Nagarjunasagar for the last seven days.

However on Monday, AP officials raised objections to Telangana officials trying to stop the release of water to right canal at control room. AP officials got into tiff with their counterparts stating that they have lost nearly 1 tmcft due to evaporation.

Ramesh, Superintending Engineer of Nagarjunasagar Dam informed the AP officials that release of allocated quota of water to right canal was over by Monday.

Answering to the questions of AP officials, Ramesh said they were just implementing the KRMB’s decisions and advised the officials to approach Board to solve their issues.

Not amused by the SE’s explanation, AP officials tried their level best to mount pressure on dam officials to release one more tmcft to right canal, but in vain.

Speaking to The Hans India, Nagarjunasagar CE Sunil said the arguments of AP officials were baseless. Informing that present water level in NSP reservoir was 127 tmcft at 507 feet, he said the Board meeting was slated on May 5, to discuss the status of availability of water at NSP and Srisailam reservoirs.

In the meeting, a decision would be taken on allocation of water to both States to address the drinking and irrigation needs in the present summer.

Meanwhile, AP officials lodged a complaint against dam officials alleging obstruction of their duties at Vijayapuri south police station of Guntur district.
