Stage dharna on National Highway 167

Mahbubnagar: Large number of students from private degree colleges in Devarkadra mandal of Mahbubnagar district blocked the National Highway 167 and pressed for their demand to establish a new government degree college in the mandal on Tuesday.

Dharna which was organised by members of Bharatiya Janata Party saw hundreds of students taking part in it. The students came onto the roads and blocked the highway causing huge traffic jam extending up to 3-4 kilometers on either side of the highway.

Even though Devarkadra is a major constituency in Mahbubnagar, there is no government degree college due to which students are forced to go to private colleges. Taking advantage of the situation, the private colleges are charging exorbitant fee. As a result, the students who wish to pursue higher education are forced to discontinue due to heavy fee in the private colleges.

“Devarkadra constituency has large number of students who hail from poor backgrounds. Therefore, we held a one-day dharna pressing for the demand of setting up of new government college. We have given a representation to the Mandal Revenue Officer in this regard and asked them to immediately sanction a new government college for the constituency,” said Katam Narasihmha Yadav, BJP OBC State vice-president.

The students who took part in the strike also poured out their woes and said that majority of the students who are poor were not able to afford education in private colleges. In view of this, they demanded the government to immediately sanction a new government degree college and help the poor and economically weak students to pursue higher education.

Yeggani Narasihmulu, BJP district secretary, Gattu Mallesh, Sai Raju, Buchanna, Anjaneilu and other students’ members from different student organisations took part in the strike.
